Saint Joseph’s men’s basketball head coach Steve Donahue announced the elevation of Bino Ranson and Thomas Boyle to the position of Associate Head Coach.
Both Ranson and Boyle were highly instrumental in the Hawks’ run to the NIT quarterfinals this season as the team finished 16-5 in its final 21 games. Saint Joseph’s became just the 13th team since 1980 to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament without playing a home game.
Serving as the St. Joe’s recruiting coordinator, Ranson joined the Hawks last season following stints at DePaul and Maryland. For his work in helping to elevate the Blue Demons program, he was named to the 2022 Advancement of Blacks in Sports’ (ABIS) Men’s Basketball Assistant Coaches Watch List.
Prior to joining the staff at DePaul, Ranson was at Maryland for 11 seasons, during which the Terrapins won 221 games. Maryland earned a berth to the NCAA tournament in five of his last six seasons with the team, winning at least one game in four of them and advancing to the Sweet 16 in 2016. In 2020, the Terps were the Big Ten regular season champions and earned wins against four ranked conference opponents during the year.
Ranson is a 1999 graduate of Southern New Hampshire University where he was a standout player and remains in the school’s top-10 in career scoring (1,899 – 8th), assists (598 – 6th) and three-pointers made (226 – 8th).
“Bino has been an invaluable member of our staff, bringing tremendous passion, boundless energy, and a relentless work ethic to everything he does,” said Donahue. “He is an outstanding recruiter who has played a key role in attracting talented student-athletes who embody the values and competitiveness of our program.”
Boyle enters his ninth season as a part of the St. Joe’s program. Graduating from SJU with his bachelor’s in 2015 and his master’s in 2018, he has been an assistant coach the past two seasons. Prior to that, he was the Director of Basketball Operations, focusing on using video and data for game preparation, statistical analysis, and research projects. Boyle coordinates the Graduate Manager Program, prepares staff meeting agendas, communicates daily schedules, and manages substitutions, fouls, and timeouts during games.
Boyle has a storied journey with the Hawks. He is the grandson of former SJU coaches Jim Lynam and the late Jim Boyle. He was a student manager under Coach Phil Martelli along with serving the program as a graduate assistant and video coordinator.
“Thomas has been an integral part of our staff, demonstrating unwavering commitment, professionalism, and a deep understanding of the game,” Donahue said. “His work ethic, leadership, and ability to connect with our student-athletes have made a lasting impact on our program both on and off the court.”
St. Joe’s went 24-12 in 2025-26, marking just the third time in program history that the team has won 20 games in three consecutive seasons. SJU had five players and coaches recognized in postseason Atlantic 10 honors.
