Mansfield University fifth-year men’s basketball head coach John Szentesy announced the newest addition to the program with the hiring of assistant coach Mike Rell ’20.
“I’m really excited to welcome Coach Rell back to MU as assistant coach,” Szentesy said. “Mike is very good with player development, has great knowledge of the game and a strong work ethic. He has related very well to the players in the short time he has been here and will be a great addition to the coaching staff.”
Rell, who was a guard for the Mounties from 2018-20, returns to the MU after spending two seasons as the men’s assistant basketball coach at Lorain County Community College.
As a player, Rell appeared in 43 games and made 27 starts in the Mountaineer backcourt, where he averaged 4.3 points, 2.0 assists and knocked down 23 trifectas over two seasons.
Rell began his playing career at Lorain County in Ohio, where he averaged 10.5 points per game over his two years, while shooting 45 percent from 3-point land in his two years.
While coaching at Lorain County, Rell was a key figure in recruitment, practice planning and skill development.
Rell became a lead floor coach and trainer for Hoop Tech 360 during May of 2022, where he runs 1-on-1 and small group training to develop shooting mechanics and hand-eye coordination, as well as teaching fellow members how to use the newest technological equipment.
Rell is a 2020 graduate of Mansfield University, where he earned his bachelor of science degree in digital communications.
The men’s basketball team will open its 2022-23 season on the road at non-conference opponent D’Youville College on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 3 p.m.
