REPORT: Jerome Tang fired as Head Basketball Coach at K-State

Multiple reports indicate that Jerome Tang has been dismissed as head coach at Kansas State University following Sunday’s 78-64 loss to Houston Cougars men’s basketball. The defeat dropped the Wildcats to 1-11 in Big 12 Conference play and marked their sixth straight loss.

The move came one game after a 91-62 home loss to Cincinnati Bearcats men’s basketball, when Tang said he was “embarrassed for the university” while criticizing his team.

Tang went 71-57 during his tenure. According to The Field of 68, discussions were ongoing regarding his $18 million buyout. However, The Manhattan Mercury reported that Tang was fired for cause stemming from his postgame comments, a designation that would relieve the school of its buyout obligation. Tang would have the option to challenge that determination.

Tang’s most successful season came in 2022-23, when Kansas State went 26-10 and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament before falling to Florida Atlantic Owls men’s basketball. The Wildcats did not return to the NCAA Tournament during his tenure, finishing 19-15 the following season and 16-17 in 2024-25.

More on this once K-State issues an official statement.
