REPORT: John Groce to Charleston

I mentioned this one in last night’s Daily Dirt – sounds like it’s now a done deal.

The College of Charleston is expected to name Akron head coach John Groce as its next head coach, per multiple reports. The hire is anticipated to be finalized pending Board of Trustees approval on Monday.

Groce would leave Akron after nine seasons, where he built the Zips into one of the MAC’s most consistent programs, compiling a 197-94 record. His teams reached the NCAA Tournament in four of the past five years, including a 29-6 finish this season after capturing the MAC Championship.

Prior to his time at Akron, Groce spent five seasons at Illinois, guiding the Illini to an NCAA Tournament appearance in his first year. He also served as head coach at Ohio for four seasons, where he led the program to two NCAA Tournament bids.

The coaching veteran has also been an assistant at Ohio State, Xavier, Butler, NC State, and Taylor.

More on this move once it’s been made official.
