REPORT: Mississippi State’s tournament berth triggers contract extension for Jans

Mississippi State basketball’s NCAA tournament appearance has triggered an automatic contract extension and salary raise for third-year coach Chris Jans according to the Clarion Ledger. As stated in the report, Jans will receive a one-year extension and a $100,000 salary increase each time MSU qualifies for the tournament. His salary will rise to $4.4 million next season and continue increasing annually by $100,000 through March 2028, before jumping to $5.45 million for the 2028-29 season and $5.55 million for 2029-30. The No. 8 seed Bulldogs (21-12) will face No. 9 Baylor (19-14) on Friday in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Jans has made history by leading Mississippi State to three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances for the first time since 2003-05. He is one of only four coaches in SEC history—joining John Calipari, Bruce Pearl, and Tubby Smith—to win at least 21 games and make the tournament in each of his first three seasons. His 63 wins with the Bulldogs mark the most by any coach in program history through their first three seasons.
