According to a Kevin Sweeney Tweet, Alabama is expected to hire Nicholls State head coach Austin Claunch as an assistant. Stadium’s Goodman also reporting this, but saying “not 100 percent done, but close.”
Claunch has been the head coach at Nicholls State for the past five seasons, where he has gone
90-61 (.596). This past season, his team went 16-15 (11-7 Southland). During his time at Nicholls, Claunch was named as the 2020-21 Southland Conference Coach of the Year, and won Back-to-back Southland Regular Season Champions (2020-21, 2021-22). He was also the youngest NCAA D1 head coach from 2018-21. Claunch has also worked as an assistant at Clemson and George Mason.
Alabama head coach Nate Oats is currently looking to replace all three assistant spots on his staff. Last season’s assistants have all become D1 head coaches: Charlie Henry (Georgia Southern), Brian Hodgson (Arkansas State), and Antoine Pettway (Kennesaw State).
More on this one when it becomes official.
