Antonio Reynolds Dean has been named assistant men’s basketball coach at College of Charleston, as announced by head coach Doug Wojcik on Monday.
Reynolds Dean spent the last five seasons on Bill Coen’s coaching staff at Colonial Athletic Association rival Northeastern University from 2009-14. He served in numerous roles with the Huskies which included recruiting, directing individual player improvement and performing additional day-to-day operations for the program, which reached the Postseason NIT twice in 2010 and 2013.
“We are very fortunate to hire an assistant coach with playing credentials, coaching experience and the exceptional ability to evaluate and recruit potential student-athletes in Antonio Reynolds Dean,” Wojcik said. “He was a great college player at Rhode Island making it all the way to the NCAA Elite Eight and went on to play professionally overseas for many years. As a coach, he mentored big man Scott Eatherton to all-league honors in addition to several other all-conference players at Northeastern, who will be the preseason favorite in the CAA next year. As a former post player, Antonio will be a wonderful teacher to our post players in particular rising senior forward Adjehi Baru and junior center David Wishon.”
Prior to Northeastern, Reynolds Dean served a one-year stint as the director of basketball operations at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Conn. He previously spent nine years playing professional basketball in the U.S. and overseas, most recently in Argentina. Reynolds Dean played seven years in the European League and one season with the Dakota Wizards of the International Basketball Association, where he was named the 1999-2000 Rookie of the Year and led the league in rebounding (12.2 rpg).
A former basketball star at the University of Rhode Island from 1995-99, Reynolds Dean played for then-head coach Al Skinner and then-assistant coach Bill Coen from 1995-97. He finished his collegiate career with the Rams scoring 1,576 points and still ranks second all-time in career blocks (235) and third all-time in career rebounds (1,028). The school-record holder for most consecutive games appeared and started in (131), Reynolds Dean was honored as the 1995-96 Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Year averaging 12.1 points per game. He was also an Atlantic 10 All-Defensive Team selection in 1996-97 and an All-Atlantic 10 Third-Team selection in 1998-99.
In each of his four seasons, Reynolds Dean and the Rams reached postseason play highlighted by a memorable NCAA Elite Eight run in 1998. As a senior, he helped URI win the 1999 Atlantic 10 Tournament marking the first-ever tournament championship title in school history.
“Antonio is very excited to join our program and is a great addition to our staff,” Wojcik said. “He has a lot of contacts in the Southeast and I have the upmost respect for the way Northeastern has evaluated and recruited players throughout the country.”
A 1999 graduate of Rhode Island, Reynolds Dean earned his bachelor’s degree in education with an emphasis in human development and family studies as well as his master’s degree in sports leadership from Northeastern in 2012. Originally from Atlanta, Ga., he and his wife, Johanna, are the proud parents of two daughters, Jasmine (9) and Naomi (8).
