Rod Barnes out as Head Basketball Coach at Cal State Bakersfield

Story: Adam Nelson (@HD_DirtKing)

Rod Barnes won’t survive the Kevin Mays scandal, and will resign as the head basketball coach at Cal State Bakersfield.

I mentioned this as a situation to keep an eye on this past weekend (DAILY DIRT), and KBAK in Bakersfield is now reporting that it is a done deal. I have also heard that long-time assistant coach Mike Scott will be elevated to interim head coach for the 2025-26 season, with an announcement expected as early as tomorrow.

Barnes had spent the past 14-seasons as the Roadrunners head coach where he went 209-231 (.475). He also served as the head coach at Ole Miss (1998-06) and Georgia State (2007-11).

Barnes had come under fire over the past month following the arrest of assistant coach Kevin Mays on multiple charges include pimping and pandering, possession of illegal firearms—among them an assault weapon—and possession of methamphetamine and marijuana with the intent to sell. A former CSUB player from 2014 to 2016, Mays has been an assistant coach with the program for six seasons. He has since been placed on administrative leave by CSUB.

Scott is entering his ninth season with the Roadrunners. The veteran assistant has also spent time at Paris JC, Texas A&M International, Wayland Baptist, Midland, and his alma mater, Fairleigh Dickinson.

More on this story once it becomes official.
