Romano named interim head coach at RIC

Mike Romano was named the interim head men’s basketball coach on May 7, 2014 when Head Coach Bob Walsh resigned to take the same position at Div. I University of Maine.

He has spent the past two seasons as an assistant men’s basketball coach with the Anchormen. He assisted Coach Walsh with all facets of the RIC men’s basketball program including recruiting, scouting, administering practice and game coaching.

Romano came to Rhode Island College after spending two years at Marist College as a Graduate Manager for the men’s basketball program. From 2010-2012, he aided the coaching staff and the Director of Basketball Operations with basketball and administrative duties, while also assisting in on-campus recruiting.

Prior to his time with the Red Foxes, Romano worked as an assistant men’s basketball coach at his alma mater, Western Connecticut State University. During the 2009-2010 season, Romano aided in day-to-day basketball operations, organized and handled the team’s film exchange program, and actively recruited potential student-athletes.

Furthermore, Romano has spent parts of the past four off seasons working with the Hoop Group, where he was a member of the Hoop Group Elite Office Staff in addition to staffing the Hoop Group’s Jam Fest AAU tournaments.

After spending three seasons as the Assistant Boys Basketball Coach at Webutuck High School from 2004-2007, Romano made his collegiate coaching debut in 2008 at Dutchess Community College, where he was a volunteer assistant men’s basketball coach for the 2008-2009 season.
