Rooney resigns as Head Basketball Coach at D2 Menlo

Menlo College Athletics has announced the resignation of Men’s Basketball Head Coach Brendan Rooney. Over the course of five seasons, Rooney established a lasting legacy of leadership, player development, and program growth that positions Menlo as a rising force in collegiate basketball.

During his tenure as Head Coach, Menlo achieved a 63-47 record, with multiple players cementing their place in the program’s record books. Senior forward Landon Seaman ’25, among others, flourished under Rooney’s mentorship, breaking individual records and exemplifying the high-performance culture he instilled. Rooney also led the Oaks through their inaugural NCAA Division II PacWest Conference season, setting the foundation for long-term success at the next level of competition.

Prior to Menlo, Rooney established himself as a proven winner at Cal Maritime, where he compiled a 52-34 record and became the fastest coach in program history to reach 50 wins. Across his head coaching career, he developed three NAIA All-Americans, 16 All-Conference selections, and numerous professional-level players.

Beyond wins and athletic accolades, Rooney prioritized academic and personal development, fostering a culture of excellence, discipline, and resilience. His teams consistently excelled in the classroom, earning GSAC Conference Scholar-Athlete and NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athlete honors, and recognition through Menlo’s prestigious Collis Steere Academic Excellence awards.

Menlo College Vice President for Athletics Keith Spataro commended Rooney’s transformative impact on the program, stating: “Brendan has been instrumental in shaping the Menlo Men’s Basketball program. His leadership, passion, and unwavering commitment to student-athlete success will have a lasting impact. We are incredibly grateful for his contributions and wish him continued success in the next chapter of his career.”

Reflecting on his time at Menlo, Rooney expressed his deep appreciation for the opportunity to lead the program: “It has been an honor to coach the Menlo Men’s Basketball team. I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together, building a strong program and developing outstanding young men both on and off the court.”

Menlo College thanks Coach Rooney and his family for their dedication, leadership, and impact. His presence on our campus will be missed.
