Santa Fe College assistant headed to D2 Francis Marion

NJCAA Santa Fe College (FL) assistant men’s basketball coach Alex Birge is headed to D2 Francis Marion University in a similar role. No release yet from FMU announcing the move, but Santa Fe issued the following statement:

Assistant Coach Alex Birge of Santa Fe College men’s basketball has accepted the same role at Francis Marion University.

Birge was in the midst of his sixth season with the Saints when this opportunity came along, and he now joins the Francis Marion program, which competes in the NCAA Division II and Conference Carolinas.

Birge’s first season at SF came in 2017-2018. His impact helped advance several players to four-year programs, and the Saints saw increased success on the floor as well. In 2021-2022, his final complete season, Birge was part of a staff that helped guide the Saints to a 24-6 record, an undefeated home record, a Centrol Conference title (the program’s first conference crown since 2012), and an appearance at the FCSAA/NJCAA Region VIII State Tournament.
