Erik Saroney has stepped down as Head Coach of the Men’s Basketball team at Onondaga Community College after 5 seasons.
“I want to thank Coach Saroney for his commitment and dedication to our student-athletes and team over the past 6 years,” said Athletic Director, Michael Borsz. “Coach is leaving on a high note with his 2022 team experiencing academic and athletic successes, not seen by the men’s basketball program in many years. He has been a powerful student advocate, mentor and teacher.”
In his 5 seasons as head coach, Saroney had a record of 121-30 and lead the Lazers to their first NJCAA Tournament appearance since 1993 this past season. During his tenure as Head Coach, he produced 3 All-Americans, 12 All-Region players, and 10 All-MSAC players. Saroney also won Coach of the Year 3 times (1 Region COY, 2 MSAC COY) during his stint at Onondaga.
“I will be forever grateful to OCC for giving me the opportunity to coach at the collegiate level. As a staff, we are very proud of the accomplishments of the last 5 seasons, but more importantly, we will never forget the efforts of our players and the relationships we built,” says Saroney. “Personally, it was a special experience to lead our last team to the National Tournament and to have the opportunity to coach my son James. It was an experience that made all the hard work worthwhile. Good Luck to the Lazers next season and beyond.”
Onondaga plans to launch a search for the next Head Men’s Basketball Coach soon.
