Southern Miss men’s basketball coach Doc Sadler announced the hiring of Tom Schuberth as an assistant coach.
Schuberth brings 30 years of coaching experience to the Golden Eagles, while helping teams appear in 11 NCAA Tournaments. He joins Southern Miss after spending the last four seasons at Jacksonville State under former Southern Miss head coach James Green.
"I’ve known Coach Schubert for almost 30 years," said Sadler. "I’ve coached and competed against him, both on the floor and in recruiting. He has always been someone that, not only have I respected, but is respected throughout the coaching community, both basketball-wise and as a person. When you say the word `coach,’ that describes him. Someone who cares about his players, not only as basketball players, but, first and foremost, as student-athletes. We’re very fortunate to have him. Our players are going to enjoy playing for him and our fans are going to enjoy getting to know him."
Prior to JSU, Schuberth served one season as the athletic director and head coach at Paris (TX) Junior College. He guided the Dragons to a 27-6 record and the 2010 Texas Eastern Conference title. PJC posted a 16-3 conference mark and finished the year ranked No. 14 in the nation.
Before joining PJC, he was the head coach at UT-Pan American from 2006-09, where he went 42-45, the best winning percentage by a UTPA coach since 1982. He was named the 2007-08 Division I Independent Coach of the Year after putting together an 18-13 record and winning the Division I Independent Championship.
He took over a UTPA program that had won just six games the previous year and hadn’t had a winning season since 1994.
Schuberth is no stranger to Conference USA. He served one year as an assistant at UAB (2001-02) before helping to guide UCF from the Atlantic Sun Conference into C-USA from 2002-06. While at UCF, he helped the Knights to an 84-41 record, as well as A-Sun titles and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2004 and 2005.
He served as an assistant at Memphis from 1992-97, helping take the Tigers from the Great Midwest Conference into Conference USA. While at Memphis, Schuberth helped UM to three NCAA Tournaments, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 1995.
Schuberth began his coaching career as an assistant at North Alabama in 1983 before moving to Louisiana-Monroe, where he served as an assistant from 1983-1992.
Schuberth began his playing career at UNLV, where he lettered on the Runnin’ Rebels 1977 Final Four squad. He then transferred to Mississippi State, where he was an Academic All-SEC and Honorable Mention Academic All-American. Schuberth earned his degree from MSU in 1981.
