University of the South Athletic Director Mark Webb has announced that Michael “Mick” Hedgepeth has been named the 23rd head men’s basketball coach in Sewanee’s storied history.
“Coach Hedgepeth came to Sewanee as an assistant coach a year ago with invaluable experiences from two superior basketball programs: first as a standout player at Belmont University and later as an assistant coach at Williams College. During his brief tenure at Sewanee, Coach Hedgepeth has shown that he has the leadership skills, the work ethic, and the recruiting skills to become Sewanee’s next head men’s basketball coach. Moreover, as our coaching search crystallized, his strength as a head coaching candidate became readily apparent.”
Hedgepeth served as an assistant coach for the Tigers during the 2016-17 season. Sewanee finished with a 15-12 record while seniors Jorden Williams and Brody Stone were named to the All-SAA First Team.
“It is hard to put into words how excited, humbled, and honored I am to accept the head men’s basketball coaching position,” said Hedgepeth. “Continuing Sewanee’s renowned academic reputation and rich athletic tradition, it is a true joy to be around student-athletes who strive for excellence in every area of their lives. Together, our staff and players will represent the University and embrace its mission with class, enthusiasm, and pride. I am grateful to Vice-Chancellor John McCardell and Mark Webb for their support. This is an incredible opportunity, and I look forward to continue building on the success of the program for years to come.”
Hedgepeth came to the Domain from NCAA Division III power Williams. At Williams, Hedgepeth was involved in every aspect of the program from coaching, to opponent scouting, and recruiting.
A four-year letterman at NCAA Division I mid-major power Belmont, Hedgepeth finished with 1,191 career points, hitting 54 percent of his shots. Additionally, Hedgepeth finished his career with 691 rebounds and 78 blocked shots.
In 2011, Hedgepeth was named the Atlantic Sun Conference (A-Sun) Tournament MVP. The two-time A-Sun honoree led the Bruins to two straight conference titles and back-to-back berths in the NCAA Tournament.
A 2012 honor graduate of Belmont, Hedgepeth earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting. An NCAA Postgraduate Scholar, he was named to the Dean’s List seven times and was named the 2012 A-Sun Male Student-Athlete of the Year and a Lowe’s Senior CLASS award finalist.
