Georgia State men’s basketball coach Ron Hunter formally announced Monday that Sharman White will be joining his staff as an assistant coach. White, a highly-successful high school coach at nearby Miller Grove in Lithonia, will join the staff immediately.
While at Miller Grove, White led the program to state championship titles in seven of the last eight years. In a decade at Miller Grove, he compiled a 264-47 record, while also winning a gold medal with USA Basketball (U16). He was also named the 2014 American Family Insurance All-USA Boys’ Basketball Coach of the Year and National High School Association Coach of the Year in 2016. Last month, he was selected as the National High School Coaching Association (NHSCA) Coach of the Year.
“I’m excited to add someone of Coach White’s caliber to our staff,” Hunter said. “He is a proven winner who is well respected in the game and in the community on the local and national levels. I look forward to working with him as we continue to build the Georgia State program and return to the NCAA tournament.”
“I always said that if I went to the collegiate level, I wanted to do it at the right place,” White said. “Seeing how coach Hunter operates at Georgia State, as well as what he did at IUPUI, shows me the direction and growth coming to this program. I look forward to learning a lot from him and hopefully also bringing a lot to the table as we continue to move the program in the right direction.”
The 2014 USA Today All-USA Coach of the Year, White guided Miller Grove to six-straight Georgia state titles, winning the 2009-2012 Georgia Class 4A and 2013 and 2014 Georgia Class 5A championships. This past season, the program won its seventh state title, finishing the year 31-3. He has an overall mark of 373-86 in 19 years of coaching.
White, who advanced Miller Grove to eight state semifinals and won eight regional titles (2008-10, 2012-16) was been recognized by the Atlanta Tip-Off Club and Georgia Sports Writers Association as the 2013 Georgia Coach of the Year. He also earned the 2013 Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Class 5A Coach of the Year, three times (2010-12) collected Georgia Class 4A Coach of the Year honors and was the 2010, 2011 and 2012 Atlanta Journal-Constitution Georgia Class 4A Coach of the Year.
Among White’s notable former players is two-time USA Basketball gold medalist Tony Parker, who won gold medals at the 2009 FIBA Americas U16 Championship and 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship.
Prior to arriving at Miller Grove, White coached at Georgia’s Carver High School and in his final season, was named the 2004 Georgia Class 2A Coach of the Year after leading Carver to the regional title and the state championship game.
Georgia State will return three starters off a squad that finished the year 16-14 next season. Practice for the upcoming season is scheduled to start June 6.
