Veteran coach Jim Shaw has been elevated to the position of assistant coach on the Saint Mary’s College men’s basketball staff, head coach Randy Bennett announced today.
Shaw, who joined the Saint Mary’s basketball program last summer as a special assistant to the head coach, provides nearly 30 years of coaching experience to the Gaels.
Shaw replaces Adam Caporn, who departed recently to accept a position as associate coach for Basketball Australia’s National Centre of Excellence men’s program.
“Jim has already made a positive impact on our program and he will be able to do even more for Saint Mary’s as an assistant coach,” said Bennett, who has led the Gaels to the highest winning percentage of any Division I program in the state of California over the last decade. “With Eran Ganot, Marty Clarke, Jim and Marcus Schroeder, we have a great staff that will help keep our program competing at a high level.”
A 1985 graduate of Western Oregon State College, Shaw came to Saint Mary’s last summer following nine seasons as an assistant at the University of Washington. He spent the previous five seasons as an assistant at the University of Oklahoma and has also served in a similar capacity at the University of Portland, Montana State, Southern Utah, Oregon State and Idaho State.
