Sherman resigns after one month on the job at Gordon State

Garett Sherman arrived on the Gordon State College campus in August, 2012, to begin the new women’s basketball program. Along with the coaching position, he would teach a variety of classes in the Health and Physical Education Department. The combination seemed to be the perfect fit since he already had classroom experience and a solid coaching background from the NJCAA ranks.

From 2008 – 2012, Sherman directed the women’s program at Allegany College of

Maryland. Under his guidance, the Trojans had an overall record of 100 – 21 and

were consistently ranked in the Top Twenty. He was named Maryland JUCO

Coach of the Year on two different occasions and earned Region XX Coach of

the Year honors twice during his tenure. In 2010 – 11, his squad set a school

record with 30 wins in a season and capped off the year with a 6th place finish

at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament.

In his first year at GSC, Sherman established relationships with women’s

basketball coaches throughout the state of Georgia and the foundation for the

program was being established. Unfortunately, budget constraints in 2013 would

delay the start of women’s basketball and a decision was made to move Sherman

to men’s basketball to assist Head Men’s Coach Israel Ingle.

With the departure of Ingle after the 2013-14 season, Athletic Director Todd Davis

elevated him to Head Men’s Basketball Coach. The transition was smooth and the

program seemed to be in good hands. However, Sherman informed Davis on

Friday he would be leaving his newly appointed post and has accepted a head

women’s basketball position out of state.

“Obviously, timing is not the greatest but I do wish Coach Sherman the best of

luck,” said Davis. “We plan to move forward as soon as possible but we will take

the proper time to find the right candidate for this combined position. Gordon

State College has a lot to offer and I’m confident we’ll continue our strong tradition

of men’s basketball.”
