North Park University has named Sean Smith as the head men’s basketball coach.
“After a search that produced over 150 applicants, Coach Smith’s background and experience proved to be the perfect fit within the university, the athletic department and the men’s basketball team,” said John Born, Director of Athletics. “We are thrilled to welcome him as the newest member of the North Park family. I am confident in his leadership and know the men’s basketball program is in great hands.”
Prior to North Park, Smith spent three seasons as an assistant coach with Wisconsin Lutheran College, including the past two seasons as associate head coach. While coaching and recruiting for the Warriors, he helped lead the men’s basketball team to the most conference wins in school history, back-to-back league championships, including the first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) championship in 10 years, and the first NACC tournament championship.
Smith played basketball at Trinity International University for four seasons (2013-2017). While at TIU, he helped lead the Trojans to a NAIA Elite Eight appearance, CCAC championship, and 30-win season his senior year. He was part of a 25-win turnaround over his four-year career. The three-time team captain played in 130 career games, second-most in program history, and was the recipient of the NAIA Champions of Character award. Smith graduated from Trinity International in 2017 with a degree in biblical studies. He received a master’s degree in sports management from Waldorf University in 2020.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to be the next head men’s basketball coach at North Park University and would like to thank President Surridge, Vice President Scola, and Director of Athletics, John Born, for trusting me to lead this program moving forward,” said Smith. “My family and I are thrilled to be joining the North Park community. I am excited about the opportunity and cannot wait to get after it with the team as we compete in the classroom, in the community and on the court.”
