Southeastern Louisiana adds Shingler to Basketball Staff

As the Southeastern Louisiana University men’s basketball team seeks to usher in preparation for the 2026-27 season, Bruce Shingler will join eighth-year head coach David Kiefer’s coaching staff.

“Bruce and I have known each other for over 20 years, going back to our time at Kansas State. I’ve seen firsthand the type of coach, mentor, and person he is,” stated Coach Kiefer. “When you’ve known someone for that long, you know exactly what you’re getting everyday – work ethic, loyalty, honesty, passion and genuine care for players.”

Shingler’s hire is pending approval of the University of Louisiana System’s Board of Supervisors. Shingler will serve as the associate head coach for the program. This new addition to Coach Kiefer’s staff will look to reconstruct a winning culture to elevate every aspect of the program while opening recruiting doors to an abundance of talent.

“Bruce brings a tremendous amount of experience, knowledge, and relationship-building ability to our program. He has coached at the highest levels of college basketball, worked with NBA players, overseas professionals and elite-level talent throughout his career,” said Kiefer. “What really separates Bruce is his ability to connect with people. Our players are going to greatly benefit from his ability to teach, mentor, and build trust every single day.”

The Prince George’s County, Maryland native resumes his coaching experience after previous stops at Bryant, Maryland, South Carolina, Towson, Morgan State and Kansas State. Shingler spent five seasons at South Carolina as a member of Frank Martin’s staff, helping the Gamecocks reach the Final Four in 2017.

Prior to his time at South Carolina, Shingler spent four years at Towson, helping the Tigers set the NCAA Division I record for largest single-season turnaround, going from one win in the 2011-12 season to 18 wins in 2012-13. The Tigers went on to claim 25 wins in 2013-14 and returned with 20 wins to close out the 2015-16 season.

“He’s a winner, he’s respected across the basketball world, and I truly believe he makes our entire program better immediately,” commented Kiefer.

Shingler gained deep roots in the profoundly talented recruiting ground of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area after a one-year stint at his alma mater, Bladensburg High School. Shingler guided the team to an 18-5 record. He also coached AAU for the DC Assault 17U team, sending over 40 members to Division I institutions in his tenure, including McDonald’s All-Americans Michael Beasley, Wally Judge and Quinn Cook.

“I’m excited not only because of what Bruce brings professionally, but because I know the kind of person our players, staff and community are getting,” said Kiefer. “He’s going to have a major impact on Southeastern Basketball from player development to office management and overall culture.”
