Southern Maine CC Names Richard DiFusco Assistant Basketball Coach

The Southern Maine Community College Athletics Department has announced the hiring of Richard DiFusco as Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach.

DiFusco coached Maine high school basketball for more than 20 years; 15 years as the Varsity Girls Coach at Cape Elizabeth High School, five as the Varsity Boys Assistant at North Yarmouth Academy, and two returning to Cape Elizabeth at the helm of the Freshman Boys program.

During his tenure at Cape Elizabeth, DiFusco’s teams qualified for 13 Maine Principals Association (MPA) tournament appearances, winning records in each season. The veteran coach is a state finalist, Western Maine Champion, three-time conference champion, and three-time Maine Association of Basketball Coaches (MABC) Class B Coach of the Year.

In addition to his duties on the hardwood, DiFusco works as a Concurrent Enrollment Consultant at SMCC.

On the new addition, Head Coach Matt Richards stated, “Coach DiFusco comes to our program with a wealth of experience from the high school scene. His experience will surely assist us in our recruiting efforts locally. He will also serve as a valuable member in mentoring our players both on and off the court.”

DiFusco commented, “Coming on board as an assistant coach at SMCC has given me the great opportunity to renew my passion and knowledge of the game. I hope that my years of experience can be an asset to Coach Richards and a talented group of young men.”

DiFusco will work alongside assistants AJ Burton (2nd season), Chad Cichon (14th season), and John LeMieux on a mission to defend a 2017 Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) title. The SeaWolves open their season at the Can-Am Tournament in Auburn, Maine Saturday, Oct. 28.
