South Carolina State men’s basketball head coach Murray Garvin announced the promotion of assistant Ken Spencer to associate head coach.
Spencer, who is entering his third season as a member of the SC State basketball staff, will – among other duties – coordinate recruiting, and academics, for the Bulldogs and also be responsible for developing the SC State guards along with on-the-floor coaching duties.
"Coach Spencer has been an asset to our program since arriving here two short years ago and his recruiting ties and on-the-court coaching ability is second to none," said Garvin. "He has earned this position with his tireless work ethic and commitment to men’s basketball in our pursuit to prominence in the MEAC."
"I am blessed and would like to thank Coach Garvin in providing me with this recognition and opportunity," said Spencer. "The faith and confidence that he has shown me with this promotion is very humbling."
A 16-year coaching veteran and accomplished coach and former player, Spencer came to SC State after two seasons (2010-12) as the head men’s basketball coach at St. Augustine’s College in Raleigh, N.C.
Prior to taking over at St. Augustine’s, Spencer spent four seasons at Winston-Salem State University as the associate head coach. Before his stint at WSSU, Spencer built a powerhouse as the head boys’ basketball coach at Marlboro County High School in Bennettsville, S.C. In eight seasons, Marlboro County High was 173-51 overall, appeared in three state title games and won the state championship in 2001.
A native of Southern Pines, N.C. Spencer was a standout basketball player at UNC Pembroke, finishing his career as the school’s all-time three-point field goal leader while earning a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Management in 1991.
