St. Cloud State men’s basketball coach Matt Reimer announced today that Chad Welk will join the Huskies coaching staff as an assistant coach.
"I’m thrilled to add Chad to our staff," said Reimer. "His background as a player in the North Central Conference and experience the last nine years as an assistant in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference will prove valuable in recruiting, scouting and coaching our players, particularly at the post position."
Welk was the associate head men’s basketball coach at Southwest Minnesota State University last season. Prior to his stint with the Mustangs, Welk was the associate head men’s basketball coach at Concordia University, St. Paul for eight seasons.
In both programs Welk served as the recruiting coordinator and successfully recruited an NSIC Newcomer of the Year, six NSIC All-Conference players and 15 different high school All-State players from Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Kansas.
Welk is a 2001 graduate of Augustana College, where he played from 1997-2000 and twice was named honorable mention all-conference. He scored 1,017 career points at Augustana and was a team captain his final two seasons. He started his collegiate career at Southwest Minnesota State, playing one season for the Mustangs in 1996-97, starting all 27 games.
Welk has a bachelor of arts degree in fitness management from Augustana College and a master of arts in sports management from Concordia-St. Paul.
