Steele Promoted To Associate Head Coach at Xavier

Travis Steele, who has spent the past seven seasons at Xavier including six as an assistant on the staff of Head Coach Chris Mack, has been promoted to Associate Head Coach. Steele has been a part of six NCAA Tournament teams in his seven years at Xavier, including four teams that reached the Sweet 16.

“I’m happy to announce Travis’ promotion within our program, as Associate Head Coach,” said Mack. “His tireless work ethic, dedication and coaching ability is second to none in our profession. I am extremely appreciative of Travis’ talents and hard work and am excited he’ll continue to be a part of Xavier Basketball moving forward.”
Steele has participated in the Nike-produced Villa 7 consortium, which annually brings together the country’s elite assistant basketball coaches to build the next generation of great basketball leaders.
Steele is involved in all phases of the Xavier program, including skill development, scouting and recruiting. Xavier’s recent recruiting classes have earned national attention and Steele is a big part of Xavier’s efforts, especially in the key areas of Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Michigan.

“Travis brings a nonstop energy around the office, on the court, and in recruiting,” said Mack. Steele came to Xavier prior to the 2008-09 season as Xavier’s Director of Basketball Operations under former head coach Sean Miller. Mack promoted Steele to assistant coach after he took over the program in 2009.

After serving as the video coordinator for a season and a half while at Indiana, Steele was promoted to the position of assistant coach in February, 2008. In that role, he participated in recruiting both on and off-campus and coached daily practices, focusing on skills development of post players. He was also responsible for tracking the academic progress of the student-athletes.

Steele joined the Hoosiers in August of 2006, taking on the duties of the video coordinator. He facilitated advanced scouting of opponents, was responsible for evaluating team practices and organized prospect recruiting on a national level to begin his stint with Indiana.

Prior to his time with the Hoosiers, he served as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Wabash Valley College. Joining the Warriors in October, 2005, Steele also functioned as the program’s Recruiting Coordinator and developed a skill instruction program. Steele spent a year with the Ohio State basketball program, serving as a graduate manager.

From 2001-06, Steele served as a coach for the Spiece/Indiana Adidas Elite AAU Basketball program. Recruiting high school players, he also coordinated practice and communicated plans to staff while organizing all travel and scheduling. Steele also served as assistant varsity basketball coach at Ben Davis High School while attending Butler University from 2001-04.

Steele graduated cum laude from Butler in May 2004, earning a bachelor of science degree in marketing. Steele was born in Danville, Indiana. He and his wife Amanda, reside in Cincinnati with their two-year-old son, Winston.
