Stony Brook names DBO

Bryan Dougher ’12, Stony Brook men’s basketball’s all-time leading scorer in its Div. I history, is returning home to #Seawolves Country as he has been named the Director of Basketball Operations, head coach Steve Pikiell announced.

Dougher will be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks associated with the men’s basketball program including coordinating team travel, scheduling of practices and facilities, official visits and recruiting records, fundraising initiatives, alumni events, ticket requests, housing, financial aid, video needs, operating budgets, equipment purchases and disbursement, camps and clinics, and student-athlete academic success.

“Bryan exemplifies everything we want in a role model for our student-athletes and will fit in perfectly on our staff,” Pikiell said. “He was a tremendous basketball player for us and became our all-time leading scorer, he competed for league championships, he graduated on time and he went on to gain valuable experience as a professional basketball player in Australia. I am so excited to welcome Bryan back and look forward to working with him as we continue to strive for excellence on and off the court.”

“I’m extremely grateful to be given the opportunity to join the coaching staff at Stony Brook,” Dougher said. “The Athletics Department and this men’s basketball program have made great strides the past few years, and I’m excited to be a part of future success. I enjoyed four great years here as a student-athlete, and I’m looking forward to many more as a coach.”

Dougher, a native of Scotch Plains, N.J., was a four-year starter at point guard for Stony Brook from 2008-12, and developed into one of the best players the program has ever had. As a freshman, he set the program’s Div. I record for three-pointers and was named to the America East All-Rookie team. Then as a sophomore, he gained second-team All-America East honors after ranking 13th in the nation in three-point field goal percentage (42.4%) and averaging 13.8 points a game. That season, he helped lead Stony Brook to its first-ever America East regular season championship.

Dougher repeated as a second-team All-America East performer as a junior and led the #Seawolves to the America East Championship final. He took the team back to regular season championship and tournament final as a senior and was a first-team All-America East pick after leading the team in scoring at 13.2 points a game and leading the conference in three-pointers made (89). He broke the school’s Div. I scoring record on March 10, 2012, completing his career with 1,609 points, and also finished with a school-best 337 three-pointers.

In 126 career games with Stony Brook, Dougher averaged 12.8 points, shot 37.4 percent from three-point range and compiled 234 assists and 125 steals.

After earning his Bachelor’s degree from Stony Brook in Business Management in May 2012, Dougher went on to sign a professional contract with the Ringwood Hawks of the Australian Basketball Association, earning team MVP honors in both seasons he played and helping lead the team to the Big V State Championship final, earning runner-up status in 2013 and winning the championship title in 2014. In his first season, he averaged 20.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists, was an All-Star 5 Guard and was a finalist for league MVP. In his second season, he averaged 21.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists and was again a league MVP finalist. Dougher, who led the league in three-pointers in both seasons, also set the Ringwood record for single-game three-pointers, knocking down 11 as part of a 48-point day on May 25, 2013.
