Michael Strickland has been named as an assistant coach at Roanoke College. He will be responsible for recruiting, scouting, player development, practice planning and other administrative duties assigned.
Strickland comes to Salem from Gonzaga College High School in Washington D.C. He helped coach the Eagles to a 27-7 record and a third place finish in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. The 27-7 record included a 19-0 start to the 2011-12 season.
Prior to GCHS, he was an assistant coach at Benedictine Prep, where he helped guide the Cadets to a 26-5 record and the Virginia Independent Schools (VIS) Div. I Boys Basketball State Championship.
He is no stranger to Roanoke, as he was a four-year letterwinner at fellow ODAC institution, Randolph-Macon. He was a member of the Yellow Jackets squad in 2009-10 that finished 26-7 and advanced to the NCAA Div. III national semifinals. While at R-MC, Strickland played on three-consecutive 20-win campaigns.
He prepped at Carolina Forest High School in South Carolina, where he finished his career as the programs’ all-time leader in points, assists, steals and three-point percentage. A first-team all-state and all-region selection as a senior, Strickland also played soccer and baseball.
