Very busy weekend….just wanted to pass along some quick updates. I expect tomorrow to be NUTS!!
• UIC: We have confirmed that Indiana associate head coach Steve McClain will be named as the next head coach at Illinois-Chicago. I have heard that the school will make an official announcement tomorrow, and that the presser will take place on Wednesday.
• NEVADA: As I mentioned on Friday, there is a BOT meeting on Thursday to approve the new head coach. Multiple sources have told me that former UTEP and Auburn head coach Tony Barbee is the leader. He is currently the Special Assistant to the Head Coach at Kentucky. I have also heard that Utah associate head coach Tommy Connor is involved here as well. Interesting side note…I have heard that both Barbee and Connor are also involved at Utah State job.
• MISSISSIPPI STATE: Many are reporting that former UCLA head coach Ben Howland is involved here. He is also rumored to be involved to at DePaul. Other EARLY names at Mississippi State include: UAB’s Jerod Haase, Valpo’s Bryce Drew, Stephen F. Austin’s Brad Underwood, and Middle Tennessee’s Kermit Davis. Should have more here tomorrow.
• ALABAMA: Steve Prohm has been “hot” here. He is an Alabama alum (worked for David Hobbs at UA as a student). I am hearing that we will have more info here once Murray State wraps-up their NIT run. They play Tulsa tomorrow night.
• FLORIDA STATE: I have heard from a few great sources that Video Coordinator Kyle Cregan will depart to become an assistant at his alma mater Flagler College (NCAA DII). Cregan has been an administrative staffer at FSU since 2009.
• SMALL COLLEGES….
• WEST FLORIDA (NCAA DII): Heard that there were 200+ applicants. Down to 5 candidates. I have some pretty good names – will confirm tomorrow.
• GOUCHER (NCAA DIII): Interviews start this week. It sounds like former Holy Cross assistant Kevin Robinson is involved here.
• Another Mid-Atlantic DIII opened this weekend…will post more on this one tomorrow…
