SUNY Cobleskill Athletic Director Marie Curran-Headley announced today that Justin Maxwell has been named as the Fighting Tigers Head Men’s Basketball Coach. Maxwell becomes the 15th head coach in the program’s history succeeding Jake Scott who left Cobleskill in January to accept the job at Keuka College in Keuka Park, N.Y. after posting a 43-52 overall record in four seasons. Maxwell had been serving as the program’s interim coach since Scott’s departure handling the program’s day-to-day and recruiting operations.
According to Curran-Headley, Maxwell was the right fit to lead the Fighting Tiger program as it enters the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) this season.
“During the interview process, Coach Maxwell demonstrated his commitment to Fighting Tiger student-athletes being students first. He shares our goal of seeing student-athletes with a championship ring on one hand and a diploma in the other,” SUNY Cobleskill Director of Athletics Marie Curran-Headley said. “He is a proven championship-caliber head coach, an elite recruiter who is well-versed in New York and the Northeastern United States landscape and has a strong background in providing a great student-athlete experience on and off the court. We are excited to welcome Coach Maxwell and his wife Ashley into the SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tiger community.”
As he prepares to take over the Cobleskill program on a full-time basis the new Fighting Tiger Head Coach talked about his new position and what his goals are for the program.
“I am very excited, motivated and grateful for this opportunity. SUNY Cobleskill is a special place and I am excited to be coming aboard at this time. Our goal is to build a high character program that the school and community can be proud of.”
Maxwell joined the Fighting Tiger staff as an assistant coach in October of 2020 after spending five years as the head coach at SUNY Ulster in Stone Ridge, N.Y. guiding the Senators to four NJCAA Division II Region XV tournament berths. During the 2017-2018 season, Maxwell propelled the Senators to the Region XV Championship, the East District Championship, and secured a spot in the final sixteen of the Division II NJCAA Basketball Championships.
Prior to SUNY Ulster Maxwell spent two years as an assistant coach at Hilbert College in Buffalo, NY, after working at Canisius College where he served as assistant coach for two seasons.
During his playing career he was a walk-on at Division I Siena College from 2005-2007, Maxwell helped the Saints reach the 2007 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship Game while playing for current Iowa University coach Fran McCaffery. After transferring to Division III Utica College, the sharp shooting guard helped the Pioneers to a 35-23 record over the next two seasons.
As a prep standout at Guilderland High School, where he played for long-time Section II coaching legend Ron Osinski, he was an All-Suburban Council Team selection as well as the team MVP during the 2005 season.
Coach Maxwell holds a bachelor’s degree from Utica College in Public Administration, and a master’s degree in Sport Administration from Canisius College.
