Szorc Promoted to Associate Head Basketball Coach at Delta State

Delta State University head men’s basketball coach Jim Boone has announced that assistant coach Robert Szorc has been promoted to associate head coach of the program.

“We have been extremely fortunate throughout my career to be surrounded by outstanding assistant coaches and some terrific people, and yet we have never promoted an assistant coach to associate head coach until now,” said Boone. “Bob Szorc is extremely deserving of this promotion and significant recognition, as he has done a tremendous job in so many areas with Statesmen basketball.”

Over the past three seasons with the Statesmen, Szorc has helped Delta State to 57 wins, including a 23-9 record last year and an appearance in the NCAA South Region tournament semifinals, the 15th time in school history that the Statesmen have made an NCAA postseason appearance.

The Statesmen are the third-winningest program in the NCAA South Region in the last four years, behind only Alabama-Huntsville and Barry, and are one of only two schools in the Gulf South Conference that have averaged at least 20 wins per season during that same time frame.

Szorc spent three years at Wheaton Warrenville South prior to his arrival at DSU, directing all aspects of the basketball program, including fundraising, fall and spring youth skill development, summer camps, and the development of the program’s feeder schools. Prior to Wheaton Warrenville South, Robert was the head coach at Alleman Catholic High School in Rock Island, Ill. At Alleman Catholic, Szorc directed the program to back-to-back regionals and advanced to the sweet 16 in only his second year as a head coach. He inherited a program that was coming off a five-win season and led the Pioneers to a 10 game improvement and 15 wins in year two.

Szorc has worked the summer tour at some of the nation’s most noteworthy basketball camps, including one of the nations’s best teaching camps, the Snow Valley Basketball School in Waverly Iowa. Szorc has also worked the Future Stars Camp in Lake Forest, IL, and the prestigious Five Star Basketball Camps.

“Bob’s passion for Delta State and his loyalty and ownership in our program have made him an integral part of our success in my time here at DSU,” said Boone. “Our current roster has his fingerprints all over it, both from a recruiting and player development prospective.”

“We are truly blessed to have the outstanding staff that we have and we cannot wait to get back to work this fall and continue building on the great success we have enjoyed both regionally and nationally.”
