University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Head men’s basketball coach Matt Lewis announced the addition of Ian Thom as the program’s top assistant coach on Tuesday (May 28).
Thom was most recently the director of operations at Vanderbilt University (Tenn.). As director of operations, Thom oversaw all administrative aspects of the basketball program, including scheduling, budgeting, travel coordination, in addition to other duties. Before stepping into that role, he was a graduate assistant that represented a consistent part of the individual improvement of players such as Scotty Pippen Jr., Liam Robbins, Jordan Wright and Rodney Chatman through on-court individual skill sessions.
“We are fired up to welcome Ian Thom to the Titan Basketball Family!” Lewis stated on Tuesday. “Ian is an incredibly talented coach who brings a variety of experiences to our program. He has a great passion for the game of basketball and for the student-athletes he works with. Ian will play a huge role on a daily basis as we continue to chase championships. Welcome to the family!”
Thom began his coaching career as an assistant at Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.) during the 2018-19 season. He moved on to become the head coach at Gulf Shores High School in Alabama for two seasons.
Thom was a team captain and two-time all-conference performer as a basketball student-athlete at Birmingham-Southern College (Ala.). Following his collegiate career, Thom played professionally for Neptune BC in Ireland for one season. He has also been contracted as a draft consultant for the NBA G-League.
“I could not be more excited about joining the UW-Oshkosh basketball family,” said Thom. “From the moment I stepped on campus, I could sense the community of the college and the competitive nature of the program, two aspects of professional and personal life that I value immensely. I cannot wait to work with Matt Lewis, the players, the staff and the rest of the college here at UW-Oshkosh!
Thom earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration and a minor in economics from Birmingham-Southern in 2017. He continued his education by earning his master’s degree in marketing from the Cork Institute of Technology in Ireland in 2018 and another master’s degree in leadership and organizational performance from Vanderbilt in 2023.
Thom begins his duties on June 1.
