Ouachita Baptist University men’s basketball coach Dennis Nutt has announced the hiring of Levin Thornton as the program’s new assistant coach.
Thornton comes to Ouachita with six seasons of coaching experience, all at the NCAA Division II level.
Most recently, he served as assistant coach at Rogers State University in Claremore, Oklahoma for the past two years. Prior to his tenure with the Hillcats, Thornton was an assistant at the University of Texas-Permian Basin (2018-20) and the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith (2016-18).
“We’re really excited to welcome Levin to our family here at Ouachita,” said Nutt. “He has worked for some good coaches in his previous stops, and has a bright future in our profession. I’ve witnessed him first hand on the recruiting trail, usually as one of the first to arrive and always the last to leave a venue. I’m looking forward to working with him day in and day out.”
“First and foremost, I would like to thank Ouachita and Coach Nutt for the opportunity to join this program,” said Thornton. “It is a great step in my young career, and I’m looking forward to hitting the ground running to make an impact for this program immediately. I’m also looking forward to working with our student-athletes in achieving their goals in life as well as becoming better basketball players. I would also like to thank Coach Barkley at Rogers State for the last two years. I learned a lot during my tenure there, and will carry the knowledge with me throughout my career.”
Thornton has been involved in all aspects of the game with recruiting, scouting, running practices, and player development. He has also managed creative content and social media for his previous two basketball teams, and will continue that role with Ouachita.
The Mineral Springs, Arkansas native holds a bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in business from UTPB.
