Central Michigan men’s basketball coach Keno Davis announced the hiring today of Chris Tifft to an assistant coaching position.

“We are very pleased to announce the hiring of Chris Tifft to our basketball staff,” said Davis, who is entering his eighth year in charge of the Chippewa program. “Coach Tifft is widely recognized as an outstanding coach on the court, an experienced recruiter, and a great person. I look forward to introducing him and his family to CMU and to the Mount Pleasant community.”

Tifft comes to CMU after stints as an assistant coach at Saint Louis (2016-19) and at TCU (2012-16).

Tifft, who played at Three Rivers (Mo.) Community College and at Nevada, began his coaching career as an assistant at Nevada from 1996-2001 before moving on to Dodge City (Kan.) C.C., where he served as an assistant from 2001-04. He was the head coach at Lamar (Colo.) C.C. from 2004-09 and at New Mexico Junior College from 2009-12.

His career record as a head coach is 158-94 and in 2019 he helped lead Saint Louis to the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament championship and an NCAA Tournament berth. He led Lamar C.C. to a fifth-place finish in the 2009 National Junior College Athletic Association National Tournament after leading the program to its first regional championship. He was named the NJCAA District Coach of the Year in 2009.

Tifft has coached 46 all-conference/all-region players along with two conference players of the year during his career.

Tifft earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in geography and a Masters of Education from Nevada.
