The Virginia Intermont College (VI) Athletic Department announced Monday that Interim Head Coach Chris Tolliver has been named head coach for the men’s basketball program at VI.
Tolliver was named assistant coach for the men’s basketball program in 2011 under then head coach Scott Hoagland. Tolliver was in charge of off-campus recruiting as well as on-floor coaching with the Cobras. He administered study tables for student athletes and kept records for all of the players’ academic progress reports.
Tolliver got his start in coaching at the high school level in 2007, when he was named assistant varsity coach for the Rowan County High School (RCHS) girls’ basketball team and was the head junior varsity coach for the Lady Vikings. He helped guide the varsity team to a 27-6 record in the first of three seasons that featured a trip to the regional finals.
Tolliver’s first head coaching job came at Jenkins High School where he took over as head coach midway through the season, leading JHS to three wins in his short stint as head coach. The following season Tolliver accepted an offer to be the assistant coach at Knott County Central High School in Hindman, Ky., where he helped guide the patriots to a 20-win season and coached the Adidas Appalachian All-Star team.
