Toussaint promoted to Full-Time Assistant Basketball Coach at West Texas A&M

West Texas A&M men’s basketball head coach Tom Brown has announced the promotion of WT alumni Zach Toussaint to a full-time assistant coaching role with the Buffaloes for the 2025-26 campaign.

Zach Toussaint was arguably one of the best offensive players to ever play at West Texas A&M University. He played his high school basketball at Johnsburg HS, a Village in Illinois” said Brown “It was not easy to get Zach to come South as he did have other offers. However, he wanted to compete for titles, and we are really glad he decided to come to WT.”

Toussaint transitioned to the Buffs’ coaching staff last season as a student assistant after a standout career on the hardwood for the Maroon & White. Toussaint recorded an incredible five-year career, appearing in a program-record 157 games during that time. One of the best shooters to go through the West Texas A&M program.

“In his prime Zach was a fantastic shooter and scorer. However, what really set Zach apart as an elite player was his physical and mental toughness. Rarely did he miss a practice/game and played with multiple injuries during his career. He is what every coach wants, a leader on and off the court” added Brown “Zach’s loyalty and commitment not only to the game of basketball but to WT is unmatched. He is the true essence of what it is meant to be a student-athlete at WT. He excelled in the classroom as he obtained his undergrad and graduate degree while leading WT to numerous championships.”

The Johnsburg, Illinois native converted 589 of his 1,333 field goal attempts (.442) and 382 of his 915 three-point attempts (.417). At the free throw line Toussaint went 263-of-298 (.883). His 1,823 points rank second all-time on the Buffs’ career scoring records while his field goals (5th), field goal attempts (2nd), three-pointers (2nd), three-point attempts (2nd), and three-point percentage (2nd) all rank inside the top five of the program’s history.

“Zach was such a team player and his understanding of the game only grew each year he was here at WT. His senior year was special playing with current professions, Larry Wise and Ryland Holt” said Brown “Ryland and Larry will eventually be in the Hall of Champions as well as other players that Zach played with during his career. JoJo Murray, Qua Grant, Derrick Geddis, Eric Mosely, Hayden Blankley, Julius Brown and Jordan Collins who also will one day be in the WT Hall of Champions.”

“We had a lot of good candidates for our assistant position but Zach with his DII experience and connections to our program really set him apart from the other candidates. Zach did a great job for us as a player and last year as a student assistant he proved he can coach” added Brown “Zach has really developed strong relationships with current and former players and is the perfect fit for us and our program.”

Zach’s contributions on the court helped his teams to three Lone Star Conference regular season titles, four Lone Star Conference tournament titles, five NCAA Tournament appearances and two NCAA South Central Regional Titles. In 2021, Toussaint nailed a game-winning three-pointer to send the Buffs to their first NCAA Division II National Championship game in program history. Toussaint and the Buffs returned to the Elite Eight in 2024 where WT beat North Georgia in the national quarterfinals before falling to Minnesota State in the Final Four.
