Grayson College has announced the addition of former Viking standout Tyrone Williams as the new Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach. A decorated former student-athlete, Williams returns to Denison following an outstanding collegiate and professional career that saw him become one of the most prolific scorers in Grayson College history.
A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Williams prepped at Olney Charter High School, leading his team to a 19-3 record and earning Philadelphia Public League National Division Player of the Year honors as a senior. He began his collegiate career at Grayson College in 2019-20, immediately making an impact for the Vikings. As a freshman, he finished second on the team in scoring at 19.0 points per game while averaging 6.9 rebounds per game.
His sophomore season saw Williams emerge as one of the nation’s premier junior college players. During the 2020-21 season, he averaged 27.6 points per game while starting all 22 games. He scored at least 30 points in eight games, including a career-high 51 points in a March victory, helping lead the Vikings to an NTJCAC Regular Season Conference Championship and a 19-3 record.
Williams was granted an additional year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic and returned for another standout campaign. He averaged 27.7 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game, recording 13 games with 30 or more points, including two 40-point performances. His dominant season earned him NTJCAC Player of the Year and NJCAA All-American honors while he once again led the nation in scoring.
In his Grayson career, Williams totaled 1,756 points while shooting 50 percent from the field and 37 percent from three-point range. He led the nation in scoring in two of his three seasons as a Viking.
Following his Grayson career, Williams continued at the NCAA Division I level with the Oregon Ducks. He appeared in 23 games as a junior, recording a season-high 12 points in an NIT victory over UC Irvine.
Williams then transferred to Old Dominion University, appearing in 31 games with 29 starts. He averaged 13.5 points per game while leading the Monarchs in rebounding at 5.6 per game and steals at 1.5 per game. He led Old Dominion in scoring in five games, including a season-high 36 points in his final collegiate game against Texas State.
Williams continued his playing career professionally with the Nottingham Hoods during the 2025-26 season of the inaugural British Basketball Championship. In his lone season with the Hoods, he averaged 25 points, five rebounds and five assists per game while earning Player of the Week honors four times.
“We’re excited to welcome Tyrone back to Grayson,” said Athletic Director Mike McBrayer. “He had an incredible career here as a student-athlete and knows firsthand what it means to be a Viking. The experience he gained at Grayson and throughout his Division I and professional career will be a tremendous asset to our program. We’re proud to have him back where his journey began, now helping develop the next generation of Vikings.”
Williams holds an Associate’s Degree in General Studies from Grayson College and a Bachelor of Science from Old Dominion University.
“Coming back to Grayson College means a lot to me,” Williams said. “This is where I started my college basketball journey and I’m grateful for the opportunity to return and help the next generation of Vikings. I’m excited to work with the coaching staff and our student-athletes and help continue building something special here.”
