UMass staff promotions

Massachusetts men’s basketball head coach Derek Kellogg has announced promotions within his staff, highlighted with Andy Allison being named assistant coach.

Allison moves up the bench after serving as the Director of Operations for the past six seasons. Additionally, Tom Doherty, the Assistant to the Head Coach the past three seasons, adds the title of Director of Operations, Lou Roe is now the Assistant Director of Operations and Matt Vogel is the Operations Coordinator.

"It’s a reward for the hard work and dedication these staff members have made to the program over the years," Kellogg said. "These are quality people who love UMass and being part of the UMass Family."

Assistant coaches Adam Ginsburg and Shyrone Chatman returns for their 10th and seventh season at UMass, respectively.

In Allison’s role as DOBO, he was responsible for organizing and maintain the men’s basketball budget, team travel and assisting with non-conference scheduling. A 2000 graduate of Youngstown State, he was also the Director of the Derek Kellogg Basketball School.

Doherty will assume many of Allison’s former duties and continue to serve as the Assistant to the Head Coach. Over the past three seasons, he has coordinated the program’s community outreach activities and served as a liaison with the various components of the athletic department’s external relations efforts.

Roe is one of the most highly-decorated players in UMass history, scoring 1,905 points in his career to rank fourth in school history. He also ranks first with 1,070 rebounds and 578 free throws made. He was a Consensus All-America selection and Atlantic 10 Player of the Year in 1995.

Roe was selected by the Detroit Pistons in the second round of the 1995 NBA Draft and spent 17 years playing professionally in the NBA, CBA, Europe and Asia before returning to UMass two years ago as he completed his bachelor’s degree in sports broadcasting.

Vogel is a 2009 UMass graduate who has spent more than nine years as a manager and video coordinator for the Minutemen. Since heading up the team’s video unit in the summer of 2009, he has assisted the coaching staff with scouting reports, highlights and film exchange. He also has overseen the student managers and been the Assistant Director of the Derek Kellogg Basketball School.

Danny Connors has also joined the staff as the video coordinator. Connors graduated from Syracuse University in May with a bachelor’s degree in Newspaper and Online Journalism. He assisted the Orange staff in statistical analysis and gained experience with the Philadelphia 76ers front office, helping with their draft and free agency preparation. Connor’s father, Mike, spent nine seasons as an assistant at UMass from 1993-2001.
