The UMKC men’s basketball program announced that Andre McGee has joined the staff as an Assistant Coach. He comes to Kansas City after spending the last four seasons as part of the University of Louisville staff, where he worked with ‘Roos Head Coach Kareem Richardson.

For the past two years, he was the Director of Basketball Operations for the Cardinals and Hall of Fame Coach Rick Pitino, while serving as a Program Assistant the previous two. He also played for the Cardinals from 2005-09.

“Andre will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to our program,” Richardson said. “There isn’t a person that knows and understands our system better than Andre.”

While on the staff at Louisville, the squad had immense success, winning the 2013 National Championship, advancing to the 2012 Final Four, winning two Big East regular season and tournament titles, and an American Athletic Conference regular season and tournament crown.

As the starting point guard his senior year in 2009, he led the Cardinals to the Big East regular season and tournament championships, earning the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament and advancing to the Elite Eight. He also helped UofL to the Elite Eight in 2008 and started 57 career games for the Cardinals.

After his playing career was complete he played professionally in Germany for Phoenix Hagen in 2009 before returning to Louisville in 2010 to join the staff.

A product of Moreno Valley, California, he played at Canyon Springs High School where he was a top 50 player nationally. He comes from a basketball family, as his father Anthony (Long Beach State) and brothers Tony (Eastern Washington) and Antoine (Colorado) all played in the college ranks.

McGee earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Louisville in 2009, before getting his master’s in exercise physiology from there in 2013.
