My sources have told me that UNC-Wilmington AD Kelly Mehrtens has met with three candidates, and is trying to schedule an interview with a fourth. So far, shes had conversations with:
Dave Odom – former head coach at Wake Forest at South Carolina. In the Cliff Ellis / Bobby Cremins mold – take a job in a nice coastal city to wrap-up your career after being a high major head coach. Ellis and Cremins have both been successful at Coastal Carolina and College of Charleston respectively.
Ed Conroy – current head coach at The Citadel. Has been successful at the Citadel – ready to make the jump to the next level.
Jerry Dunn – former head coach at Penn State. Resigned as the associate head coach at Michigan during the season, but has rejoined the program. Is a Raleigh, NC native.
The other name that I’ve heard is Vermont head coach Mike Lonergan. He was the head coach at Catholic U and an assistant at Maryland. Took his Vermont team to the NCAA tourney this year. He has not met with Mehrtens yet, but it appears a meeting is on the horizon.
Kansas assistants Joe Dooley and Danny Manning have both said that they are not interested, as has Texas assistant Rodney Terry.
