UNH Basketball Staff Update

University of New Hampshire head men’s basketball coach Nathan Davis announced his coaching staff for the 2023-24 season Monday afternoon with the hiring of Jimmy Allen, Tyler Wilson, and Luis Guzman.

Allen joins Davis’ coaching staff for the 2023-24 season after spending seven seasons as the head coach of Army West Point. The West Point, N.Y. native will serve as Associate Head Coach for the Wildcats. In his time at Army, Allen coached the team to 98 wins and in the last four seasons, Army finished 36-32 in Patriot League play, the best mark in program history since the Black Knights joined the conference. His 98 wins at Army are the fourth-most all-time by a head coach in the program’s history. Army won 17 games in the 2022-23 season, the second-most wins in a single-season since 1978.

Prior to arriving at Army, Allen was the head coach of Division III Averett University in Danville, Va. where he led the program to three NCAA tournament appearances and was named the USA South Athletic Conference Coach of the Year three times.

“I have known Jimmy for over 30 years. We competed against one another as players, worked together as assistant coaches, then competed against one another as head coaches,” said Davis. “Jimmy is as fine a coach as I have been around. He is an excellent coach on the court, with players, and in recruiting. He was the most successful head coach at Army West Point in over 40 years. We are fortunate to have him here with us at UNH.”

Wilson will be an assistant coach on Davis’ staff and joins the Wildcats after six seasons on the Manhattan sidelines as an assistant coach. Manhattan compiled 72 wins in the six seasons the Bronx, N.Y. native was on staff. During his first three years, he worked as a video coordinator and special assistant to the head coach. His responsibilities included skill development as well as scouting. He was promoted to a full-time assistant in 2019, receiving more scouting responsibilities, and working with players to further develop their skillset.

As a player for Manhattan from 2013-17, Wilson was a part of two teams that went on to play in the NCAA tournament after winning MAAC championships. He is top five in all-time assists and is top three in single-season assists.

“Tyler is a bright young coach who brings tremendous experience to the program,” Davis said. “He has been involved in every aspect of a college basketball program. He does an excellent job recruiting and coaching on the floor with the players. He will be a tremendous asset to our program.”

Guzman, who will also be an assistant coach on the staff, comes to Durham after spending one season as the Director of Basketball Operations for the University at Albany. At UAlbany, Guzman helped coach freshman Jonathan Beagle to an America East Rookie of the Year award this past season.

Before joining the Great Danes, Guzman was the Director of Basketball Operations at Stetson University (2019-22) in DeLand, Fla., Associate Head Coach at NJCAA Monroe College (2018-19) in New Rochelle, N.Y., and the Director of Player Development at Rider University (2017-18) in Lawrenceville, N.J. He also had stops as a Director of Scouting and Assistant Coach with FIBA (2017-22) and with the NBA as a League Basketball Operations Manager (2017-18).

The Bronx, N.Y. native played four years at Temple University in Philadelphia and was team captain in his senior season. He helped lead the Owls to three Atlantic 10 Championships and four NCAA tournament appearances during his career.

“Luis is an outstanding addition to our staff,” said Davis. “He was a championship player at Temple. Luis played overseas before joining the coaching profession. He has worked with great coaches in excellent programs. He will be a valuable addition that can help in every aspect of the program, on and off the court.
