University of Dayton men’s basketball coach Anthony Grant has announced several staff changes:
• Andy Farrell, formerly Director of Scouting & Program Development, is now Special Assistant to the Head Coach & Recruiting Coordinator
• Brett Comer, formerly a Graduate Assistant, is now Director of Player Development
• Khyle Marshall, officially named a Graduate Assistant
• Casey Cathrall, named Strength & Conditioning Coach, replacing Ed Streit (who took a position with the Los Angeles Lakers)
“These personnel changes reflect steps forward for Dayton basketball and our coaching staff,” Grant said. “Andy and Brett have been important to our program from Day One. Khyle brings a strong basketball experience to his GA position. And we are very fortunate to be able to bring Casey back on board. Ed had a great professional opportunity and we wish him well, but Casey’s return gives us continuity in our strength program.”
Farrell, a 2007 Dayton grad, has been with the program since Grant’s arrival in 2017. Prior to returning to UD, he has been on the staffs at Southwest Mississippi Community College, Longwood, DePaul and VCU (under Grant).
Comer also joined the Flyer basketball program in 2017. As a college player, he was the point guard on Florida Gulf Coast’s “Dunk City” Sweet Sixteen team. He is ranked 24th all-time on the NCAA Men’s Basketball Division I career assists list, graduating in 2015. A knee injury ended his professional career.
Marshall’s basketball journey also has him connected with Florida Gulf Coast. He was FGCU’s video coordinator last season. A three-year starter at Butler who played on the Bulldogs’ Final Four team in 2011, Marshall played professionally for four seasons overseas from 2014-18.
Cathrall spent the 2018-19 season as the men’s basketball strength and conditioning coach for the University of Miami. He was Grant’s first strength coach at UD. Cathrall had previously served at Miami in the same capacity during the Hurricanes’ ACC championship season in 2012-13. He returns to UD after his successor, Ed Streit, who returned to the NBA when he accepted a position with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Dayton was 21-12 and reached the NIT in Anthony Grant‘s second season as the Dayton head coach. UD was third in the Atlantic 10 Conference with a 13-5 record. Dayton was second in the nation as a team in field goal percentage (.504, 902 of 1789). That was also the best single-season FG% in school history.
The Flyers return three starters and will add five veteran redshirts in 2019-20. Included in the starters are All-Atlantic 10 performers Obi Toppin (2019 Rookie of the Year and First Team All-A-10), and junior guard Jalen Crutcher (Third Team All-A-10). Also returning are 2018-19 co-captains Trey Landers and Ryan Mikesell.
