UNT’s Haggerty dies in crash

University of North Texas Director of Basketball Strategy and Operations Nelson Haggerty died in an early morning crash today. The following is from KAUZ News Channel 6 in Wichita Falls, TX:

The third-winningest coach in Midwestern State Men’s basketball history has dead after an early Friday morning crash.

DPS officials say Nelson Haggerty died at 2:30 a.m. in a single car rollover crash on Highway 380 near Decatur.

Haggerty spent eight years as the head coach of the Mustangs, racking up 155 wins and five Lone Star Conference Championships before resigning in March of 2019.

He was most recently on the men’s basketball staff at the University of North Texas.

Haggerty was 47 years old

Haggerty had been on the North Texas staff since 2019.

During his time as the head coach at Midwestern State, he was a two-time LSC Coach of the Year, NABC Regional Coach of the Year and 2016 TABC Small College Coach of the Year.

Haggerty is MSU’s third-winningest coach ever and his .640 winning percentage in Wichita Falls is the fourth-best in program history. He’s the fastest coach in MSU history to 100 wins, getting to the mark in just 130 games.

The 1995 Baylor grad had 699 career assists for the bears (the most in school history). The all-conference point guard, led the nation in assists during his senior season with a 10.1 average. He holds the program record for most assists in a game with 19. Overall, eight of Baylor’s 10 best single-game assist performances are owned by Haggerty.
