Chris Capko has been named Director of Basketball Operations, Kurtis Shultz the Galen Center Strength and Conditioning Coach and Dieter Horton remains on staff with the new title of Special Assistant to the Head Coach, it was announced by USC men’s basketball head coach Andy Enfield today (July 10).
Capko spent the past two seasons as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Georgia Southern. Prior to that he served as the shooting coach at Stetson for two seasons (2010 and 2011). At Stetson his other duties included recruiting, advance scouting, running team drills and player conditioning workouts. Prior to that he served as a graduate assistant at Marshall where he assisted in the day-to-day operations of the program, monitoring academic progress of the players, weight training, conditioning, film exchange and assisting with the recruiting process. As a student-athlete he played one season at Florida before transferring to South Florida for his final three seasons. As a junior he was fifth in the Big East in assists and was selected team captain as a senior. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications at USF in December of 2006 and a Master’s in Adult and Technical Education from Marshall in 2009.
Shultz arrives at USC after three seasons (2009-11) as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head strength and conditioning coach and six seasons overall with the NFL team. He oversaw the Buccaneers year-round conditioning program while also overseeing the 9,353 square foot workout facility that he helped design. Shultz joined Tampa Bay after two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings (2004-05) as the head strength and conditioning coach. In 2003 he served as the assistant strength coach with the Cincinnati Bengals. Shultz gained a bulk of his professional experience as strength coach for the Maryland basketball program, helping the team to the 2001-02 NCAA title. Shultz was also a basketball player at Maryland (1991-95), playing in 67 career games and serving as team captain as a senior. His final two seasons with the Terrapins they advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.
Horton served the last three seasons as an assistant coach for the USC men’s basketball program and has been a vital component to the program as it has transitioned to the leadership of coach Enfield. Horton has been a key member of the Trojans’ coaching staff the past three seasons and in his new role will be able to utilize his expertise and experience of working at USC to help the new staff establish a national program.
