UTRGV announces hiring of Provenzano has Assistant Basketball Coach

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) head men’s basketball coach Kahil Fennell announced the hiring of Michael Provenzano, who spent the last two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Michigan State, as an assistant coach.

Throughout his tenure at Michigan State, Provenzano was responsible for player personnel scouting reports, on-court individual and group skill development workouts with a focus on the post players, and assisting in recruiting.

Provenzano helped the Spartans to two NCAA Tournament appearances, helping the program reach the Elite Eight this past season to go along with a Big Ten regular season title and a No. 7 national ranking by the Associated Press.

“I am thrilled to have Michael to join us,” Fennell said. “He joins us from a big-time program at Michigan State with an unbelievable coaching staff led by Tom Izzo. He was able to compete at a really high level as a player and has some professional coaching experience in Canada to go along with his time at Michigan State. To have someone with his pedigree and who I have familiarity with, his impact on this program will vary from player development to video and everything in between.”

Prior to his time at Michigan State, Provenzano spent two seasons as the associate head coach with the London Lightning of the National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC). Provenzano helped the Lightning to back-to-back NBLC Championships as one of the youngest assistant coaches in major professional basketball.

Before joining the Lightning, Provenzano was an assistant coach at the London Basketball Academy, where he developed eight Division I players.

Provenzano also has spent time working with youth basketball players having founded Chaining and Training Basketball Camp in London, ONT, Canada.

“My family and I are humbled and thrilled to be making the move to the Rio Grande Valley this year,” Provenzano said. “Coach Fennell is well-known and respected in this profession for his ability to develop talent, scheme, and win at a high level. More importantly, his reputation for being a great human being makes him the kind of coach you want to go to war with every day. I am eager to learn from and work alongside this talented, experienced staff as we continue to push this program forward.”

Provenzano played professionally in 2020-21 with Melilla Sport Capital Enrique Soler in the Spanish 3rd League.

Collegiately, Provenzano was a four-year starting point guard and a three-year captain at Simon Fraser University, finishing with 1,237 points and 482 assists.

Provenzano earned his Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences in 2020 from Simon Fraser and completed his Master of Science in Kinesiology from Michigan State.

Provenzano comes to the Rio Grande Valley with his wife, Sarah, and their daughter, Charlotte.
