UVa-Wise Hires Assistant

UVa-Wise head men’s basketball coach Blake Mellinger today announced the addition of Nathan Edick to his coaching staff. Edick, who spent the previous two seasons at Virginia Commonwealth University, will be responsible for opponent scouting, recruiting and working with perimeter players in his new role.

"I am thrilled to be able to add Nate to my coaching staff. He comes highly recommended from a group of coaches who are at the top of our profession, whom I have tremendous respect for." Mellinger said. "Nate possesses a terrific basketball background, both as a player and as a coach, and he will play an invaluable role in taking this program to the next level. He will be a tremendous asset to our athletics department, campus community, coaching staff, and student athletes."

In his two years at VCU as a graduate assistant, Edick helped the Rams coaching staff with individual and team workouts, opponent scouting reports, video implementation and analysis, and assisted with the day-to-day operations of the program. VCU won a total of 53 games including back-to-back Atlantic-10 Championship game appearances and advancing to the NCAA Tournament over the last two seasons.

"I am very excited about the opportunity to join Blake Mellinger as an assistant coach at UVa-Wise. I believe under his guidance the ceiling is high for what our student-athletes can achieve and experience throughout their playing careers and beyond," Edick said. "UVa-Wise has the pieces in place to build a very successful men’s basketball program with the current administration, academic programs and the David J. Prior Convocation Center. This is a tremendous opportunity for me and I am eager to take what I have learned from my mentors and begin working with our student-athletes on their academic and athletic endeavors."

Edick began his coaching career at the University of Tulsa in 2011 where he spent a season as the video coordinator. His primary responsibility was coordinating the program’s video operations, including film breakdown, film exchange, and evaluation video for Tulsa players. He also assisted the coaching staff with opponent scouting reports, on-campus recruiting visits and assisting with the team’s academics.

The Worthington, Ohio native graduated from Otterbein University (Ohio) in June 2011 where he was a two-time Academic All-OAC and All-District selection. During his senior season he was the recipient of the Ohio Athletic Conference Clyde Lamb Award. In his freshman season at Marietta College, he was the NCAA statistical champion in three-point shooting after connecting on 54.8% of his three-point attempts.

Edick completed his Master’s Degree in education with a focus in Sports Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth in May 2014.
