Johnson State College has appointed Tommy Verdell of the Bates College coaching staff as JSC’s new assistant athletics director and head men’s basketball coach.

"We are excited to welcome Tommy Verdell to Johnson State," said JSC Director of Athletics Jamey Ventura. "His experiences at the NCAA Division III and DI levels as well as at the high school and professional levels make him a great addition to Johnson."

Verdell comes to Johnson after spending two years as the assistant men’s basketball coach at Bates College in Maine. Last year the team posted a record of 10-15 overall and 4-6 in the competitive New England Small Colleges Athletic Conference (NESCAC).

Prior to Bates, Verdell spent two seasons as an assistant coach for the Springfield Armor of the NBA developmental league for head coach and former Boston Celtic Dee Brown. Alongside coaches Brown and Kevin Whitted, Verdell helped develop several Armor players, including former Division I first team all-American Scottie Reynolds and current Philadelphia 76er Craig Brackins.

At the scholastic level, Verdell spent three seasons as head boys’ varsity basketball coach at Wilbraham & Monson Academy in Massachusetts and was also the assistant coach of the Amherst (Mass.) Regional High School Division I state championship team. Verdell has coached at five-star basketball camps throughout the U.S. as well as in Beijing, China, where he has conducted coaching clinics in addition to camps.

Verdell earned his bachelor’s degree in coaching from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2003.

About his move to Johnson State, Verdell said that he "looks forward to being part of a department that holds student-athletes to high standards in the classroom, in the community and on the court," adding, "I’m eager to get started with the Badgers as we look to bring a North Atlantic Conference championship banner home to JSC."
