Vermont State Johnson is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Head Men’s Basketball Coach and Assistant Athletics Director, Alfred Johnson.
“Alfred was way more than a basketball coach; he was a husband, a friend, a mentor, and an incredible Assistant Athletic Director. His dedication to his coaching staff and his players is something we can all be inspired by,” said Director of Athletics, Greg Eckman.
“From the moment he accepted the position, he lived every moment of his life working for the success of our student athletes and the Johnson Athletic Department and VTSU. His team committed themselves to community service, personal growth, and graduating.”
Johnson joined the VTSU men’s basketball staff entering the 2021-2022 season, bringing more than 40 years of coaching experience to the Badgers. Prior to VTSU, Johnson amassed numerous accolades. Notably, holding the distinction of being the only player/coach to win a Conference Championship at Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia, PA and standing as the all-time third winningest basketball coach at Holy Family University. “Conference Coach of the Year” and “Philadelphia Area Small Coach of the Year” were distinctions Johnson held over the course of a career that totaled exactly 300 wins, culminating with a West Division Championship title at VTSU to conclude the 2024-25 season.
Within his role at VTSU, Alfred became one of the main faces not only on campus, but throughout the Vermont communities; especially in Lamoille County, where he and his wife Wanda lived and worked. They made many friends in their years here, through mentoring local youth, supporting local community Thanksgiving meals, and assisting whenever and wherever was needed.
“Alfred loved poetry and enjoyed reminiscing about his youth and all things Philadelphia. His passion for helping others, being positive, and his thirst for knowledge are some things that I will hold closely in my heart,” reflected Eckman.
“Outside of athletics, Johnson was a dedicated family man whose grandson would visit in the summers to our attend our basketball camps and enjoy the few weeks he spent here with his Grandpa Alfred and Grandma Wanda. His smile, positive outlook on every situation, and willingness to help and support other coaches and student athletes goes unmatched. He is truly one of one.”
“My heart goes out to the love of his life, his wife, Wanda, every individual that Alfred has ever connected with, former coaches, and players, as the basketball and athletic community lost one of our pillars today.”
Information regarding memorial arrangements will be shared when available.
