Vance-Granville Community College has named Michael Woody as the new head coach of the Vanguards men’s basketball team. Woody (pictured above) most recently served as assistant men’s basketball coach for Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory. He will lead VGCC’s program into its sixth season of play in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region X this fall.
Woody brings to his new role the personal experience of being a student-athlete at the junior college level. He started his education, and his playing career, at Alabama Southern Community College (Monroeville, Alabama), where he earned a degree in Computer Technology. Woody then went on to play basketball for NCAA Division II Columbus State University (Columbus, Georgia), from which he earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
From 2007 through 2012, Woody was the Head Coach for the Alabama Hawks Athletic Club, teaching high school-age young men individual and team skills. Woody’s teams qualified for participation in the Youth Basketball of America (YBOA) national tournament held in Orlando, Florida, each of those years, as the YBOA representative for the state of Alabama.
During his tenure as assistant coach at CVCC, Woody helped lead the Buccaneers to a 21-11 record (the most wins of any CVCC Men’s Basketball team in ten years). CVCC advanced to this past year’s Region X tournament semifinals. Two of his players were named to the All-Region X second team, and one received an NJCAA Award for Superior Academic Achievement.
Woody currently serves as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve and is a decorated combat veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. He also served as an elected Town Councilman in Five Points, Alabama for 18 years prior to coming to CVCC.
