Shorter University has announced that Wade Anderson will become head coach of the university’s men’s basketball program.
Anderson comes to Shorter University from Christian Brothers University (CBU) in Memphis, Tenn., where he spent two seasons as an assistant coach. While there, he helped CBU to two Gulf South Conference tournament appearances including a conference semifinals appearance in 2016-17 and an at-large bid to the 2017 NCAA Division II tournament. At CBU, Anderson recruited and coached an All-South Region team member, two All-GSC players, and seven All-Academic team members.
“We are excited to have Wade heading our men’s basketball program,” said Shorter University interim Athletic Director Aaron Kelton. “His knowledge of the conference and of the region should make the transition a smooth one. We are excited for the enthusiasm he is going to bring to our program. His having worked in the Gulf South Conference is a bonus for us in filling this position, and we look forward to working with him.”
“Coach Anderson has been successful in recruiting players who perform well both on the court and in the classroom,” said Shorter University President Dr. Don Dowless. “Most importantly, he understands the positive impact he can have on the young men on his team. He is a man who loves the Lord and who brings that spirit into his professional life. We look forward to the contributions he will make at the helm of our men’s basketball program.”
Prior to his time at CBU, Anderson spent eight seasons as the assistant coach at the University of West Florida in Pensacola. During his time there, the team reached three conference tournaments, including two semifinal appearances. They also tied a school record for best start to a season and second-most wins in a season. Anderson recruited and coached a Division II All-American, seven All-GSC players, and 21 All-Academic team members. Three of his players went on to play professionally overseas.
Anderson also spent two seasons at Faulkner State Community College in Bay Minette, as an assistant coach to junior college coaching legend Jack Robertson. In 2006-07, the Faulkner State team won the Alabama Southern Conference Championship and finished the season with a 22-6 record overall.
“My wife and I are extremely happy to be joining the Shorter family,” Anderson said. “We have learned throughout my coaching career to completely trust the Lord’s guidance in our lives, and we know He has amazing plans for us here. I am honored to lead the Shorter men’s basketball team, and I am excited to be able to mentor these young men both on and off the court.”
Anderson earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Pensacola Christian College, where he was a four-year letterman for the Eagles basketball team. He earned the Master of Science in Exercise Science from the University of West Florida, where he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant coach.
