The Wagner job is a hot one right now. Even though Danny Hurley departed for URI, he has left the program in great shape. There are a lot of great candidates lining up for this one. Originally, it was Bobby Hurley’s job if he wanted it, but he decided to remain with his brother and head up to URI. He has expressed in wanting to be a head coach, just not yet. With option #1 not interested, here are some of the guys that I’ve heard who are involved, or trying to get involved….
Scott Spinelli – Assistant Coach Maryland. Was a finalist for the job two years ago when Hurley got it. Just completed his first season at Maryland. Has also been an assistant at Nebraska, Texas A&M, Wichita State, Wyoming, Loyola (IL), and American.
Martin Ingelsby – Assistant Coach Notre Dame. Another finalist the last time around. Has spent 9 years on the staff at ND – his alma mater. He has previously worked at Wagner – he was an assistant there from 2002-2003.
Jim Engles – Head Coach NJIT. Has led NJIT in their transition to DI. Has had back-to-back 15 win seasons. Spent 18 years as a DI assistant – 6 of those were spent at Wagner under Tim Capstraw. Has also worked at Columbia and Rider.
Darren Savino – Assistant Coach Cincinnati. Has worked at four different Big East schools – UC, St. John’s, Seton Hall, and Rutgers. Is a St. Anthony’s (NJ) grad where he played for Bob Hurley Sr, and was a teammate of Bobby Hurley.
Jim Carr – Assistant Coach Rutgers. Has very close ties with Hurley. Has been at Rutgers for 13 seasons in various capacities. Also worked as an assistant at FDU.
