Wanamaker promoted to Head Basketball Coach at Texas Wesleyan

Texas Wesleyan University announced the promotion Brian Wanamaker to the position of Head Men’s Basketball Coach, effective immediately. Wanamaker, an alumnus of the University, has been an integral part of the Ram’s basketball program since 2019, serving as assistant coach.

Throughout his four-year tenure with TXWES, Wanamaker has played a pivotal role in guiding the Rams to consecutive NAIA Tournament qualifications, contributing significantly to the program’s five tournament appearances in the last six seasons.

“We are thrilled to entrust the leadership of our Rams to Brian Wanamaker,” said Athletic Director Ricky Dotson. “His track record of excellence in player development and recruitment, coupled with his deep commitment to the program, makes him the ideal choice to lead us into this exciting new era of TXWES basketball.”

As a former standout player for the Rams, Wanamaker’s achievements on the court are legendary. Twice earning All-Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) honors and leading the team to a NAIA National Tournament, Wanamaker’s contributions to Rams basketball are etched in history. His exceptional performance during the 2010-2011 season earned him the prestigious RRAC Player of the Year award and recognition as a 1st-team NAIA All-American. Additionally, Wanamaker earned a Bachelor of Science in liberal arts from Texas Wesleyan University.

Prior to returning to TXWES as a coach, Wanamaker pursued a successful professional basketball career, including stints in the National Basketball D-League and various European leagues.

“I am deeply honored and excited to take on the role of head men’s basketball coach at my alma mater,” Wanamaker said. “I am grateful to Coach Shingleton for his trust and support, and to Ricky Dotson and President Emily Messer for believing in me and providing this opportunity. Leading the Rams is a privilege, and I will continue to foster a culture of excellence both on and off the court.”

With a passion for Texas Wesleyan and a dedication to nurturing the next generation of student-athletes, Wanamaker is poised to lead the Rams to new heights of success. As he takes the reins, Wanamaker’s vision for TXWES basketball is clear: to uphold the University’s legacy of competitive excellence while empowering student-athletes to excel both academically and on the court and contribute meaningfully to their community.
