Washington College Hires Assistants

Washington College head men’s basketball coach Rob Nugent has announced the hiring of Kevin Breslin ’12 and Ryan Van Zelst as the team’s new assistant coaches.

Breslin was an All-Region and All-Conference player for the Shoremen and ranks sixth all-time in scoring at Washington College with 1,517 career points. He was named to the All-Centennial Conference first team as a junior and a senior after earning second-team honors as a sophomore. He was also named to the 2012 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-Middle Atlantic District second team and the 2012 D3Hoops.com All-Middle Atlantic Region third team. He was the co-male winner of the College’s 2012 Senior Athletic Award and was the male winner of the College’s 2011 Thomas Reder Spedden Medal. The Shoremen’s Most Valuable Player as a junior and a senior and the team’s Most Improved Player his sophomore year, Breslin was a two-year team captain who led the Centennial Conference in scoring (18.4 points per game) as a senior.

Following his graduation from the College, Breslin spent two years with the Washington Generals, touring the globe and playing against the Harlem Globetrotters. He had significant off-court responsibilities with the Generals in a player-coach role. He has also been heavily involved with the Alexander Basketball Academy Global Squad.

Breslin, who majored in both English and Philosophy, graduated from Washington College in May 2012.

Van Zelst spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at York (Pa.) College. At York, he worked with the team’s guards and wings, recruited in six states, and created the team’s Facebook page, among other duties.

Van Zelst also previously worked as the Director of Institutional Advancement at Conwell-Egan Catholic High School, his scholastic alma mater, and as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Gwynedd Mercy College. At Conwell-Egan, he headed up the school’s advancement and fundraising efforts, working closely with alumni. As an assistant coach at Gwynedd-Mercy, he was heavily involved in recruiting.

Van Zelst played collegiate basketball at Albright College for three years. He has also been a coach and counselor at various basketball camps.

Breslin and Van Zelst replace Dorian Long, who was recently named the Director of Basketball Operations for the men’s basketball team at James Madison University.
